Holiday Color Touch-Ups in Houston Before Thanksgiving

Janelle Alexis Salon

November 6, 2026

Every November in my Houston salon, the calendar fills with the same request: 'I need my color refreshed before Thanksgiving photos.' After more than twenty years behind the chair, I can tell you the clients who look polished at family dinner are the ones who booked early, not the ones who hoped last year's tone would still photograph well under kitchen lighting.

Here is how I plan holiday color touch-ups at Janelle Alexis Salon so your hair looks intentional from Thanksgiving through the first December parties.

Why holiday lighting exposes tired color

Warm indoor lights, phone flashes and group photos show brassiness, faded ends and a grow-out line faster than weekday office lighting. If your last color was six or eight weeks ago, a gloss or root touch-up before the holiday week can make the whole style look fresher without a full redo.

Houston adds another layer. We can go from a cool front to sticky humidity in the same week. Color that looks soft on a dry day can look dull once frizz lifts the cuticle. Pairing a color refresh with a strong blowout plan helps your finish hold through travel, cooking and company.

When to book before Thanksgiving

Our salon is open Tuesday through Saturday, 9am to 6pm, and closed Sunday and Monday. The Tuesday and Wednesday before Thanksgiving book quickly, so I recommend planning color one to two weeks earlier when you can.

  • Full root touch-up or gray coverage: book 7 to 14 days before Thanksgiving so the tone settles and you still have time for a blowout closer to the holiday.
  • Gloss or toner refresh: often fits closer to the event week if your base is already in good shape.
  • Color plus cut plus blowout: split the services if the appointment would feel rushed. A clean cut the week before and a blowout nearer to dinner works well for many guests.

Book online through Phorest, call 713-780-2412, or visit us at 5750 Woodway Drive, Suite 110, Houston, TX 77057 near the Galleria and Tanglewood.

What kind of touch-up do you actually need?

Not every holiday color appointment is the same. In consultation we look at your grow-out, previous formula, porosity and how much brass or fading shows at the ends.

Root touch-up: best when the part and hairline are showing a clear band. We match your formula and blend so the line softens instead of looking painted on.

Gray blending: a softer approach when you want less contrast as silver comes in. Read more in our guide to gray blending in Houston.

Gloss and toner: ideal when the overall tone looks dull or brassy but the roots are still acceptable. A gloss can restore shine before photos without a long processing day.

Dimensional refresh: balayage and highlight guests often need a soft face-frame or toner tweak rather than a full redo right before travel. See our Fall and Winter 2026 hair color trends post for seasonal direction.

All salon prices are listed as 'and up' because length, density and stylist level change the final number. We will walk through options before anything goes on the bowl.

Pair color with a lasting holiday blowout

Color looks better when the finish is polished. If Thanksgiving dinner is your main event, plan a blowout for Tuesday or Wednesday of holiday week. Our post on Thanksgiving blowouts in Houston covers how to make the style last through steam, sleep and surprise rain.

If frizz usually undoes your finish in Houston weather, ask about a Brazilian Blowout ($381 and up) or a keratin treatment ($310 and up). Those services are better as a planned smoothing appointment than a last-minute add-on the morning of Thanksgiving, so book them earlier in the month when possible.

Makeup that matches fresh color

Once the hair is camera-ready, a soft makeup application ties the look together for family photos. Makeup application starts at $103 and up. You can also shop the line I designed at Janelle Alexis Cosmetics. Products are cruelty-free, made in the USA and ship from the USA, with formulas that stay good for all skin types when you choose the right shade and finish. A simple holiday-week checklist

  1. Book color 1 to 2 weeks out, or sooner if you need a bigger change.
  2. Schedule a blowout closer to Thanksgiving dinner.
  3. Confirm whether you need roots, gloss, blend or a combination.
  4. Tell your stylist about travel, humidity and photo plans so we finish for real life, not just the mirror.
  5. Sleep on silk, use dry shampoo early and keep steam off the hair during cooking.

FAQ

How soon before Thanksgiving should I color my hair?
Most clients do best booking a root touch-up or major color one to two weeks before Thanksgiving, then a blowout closer to the holiday. Gloss appointments can often sit nearer to the event.

Can I get color and a blowout the same day?
Sometimes yes, depending on the service length and your stylist's schedule. Bigger color services may need to be split so neither step feels rushed.

What if my hair looks brassy but roots are fine?
Ask about a gloss or toner refresh. It can restore tone and shine for photos without a full color appointment.

Do you offer Brazilian Blowout or keratin before the holidays?
Yes. Brazilian Blowout starts at $381 and up; keratin options start at $310 and up. Book earlier in November when you can.

What are your hours?
Tuesday through Saturday, 9am to 6pm. Closed Sunday and Monday.
