Every fall, right around the time the first cold front rolls through Houston, my phone starts lighting up with the same question: "Can I get extensions in before the holidays?" The answer is almost always yes, as long as you plan ahead. After more than twenty years behind the chair, I can tell you that the women who love their holiday extensions the most are the ones who started the process early, not the ones who called the week before Christmas. Here's how to time it, how to choose a method, and how to keep your extensions looking gorgeous from Thanksgiving dinner to the New Year's Eve countdown.

Why extensions are so popular for the holidays

The holidays are a season of photos. Family pictures, office parties, galas, weddings and New Year's Eve all land within a few short weeks, and a lot of my clients want a little extra length, fullness or volume for all of it. Extensions can give fine or thinning hair more body, let you wear a fuller blowout or bigger curls, and fill in a haircut you're growing out. They also give you more styling options when you're dressing up several times in one month.

The key word is seamless. Great extensions should be invisible, and that takes the right method, the right color match and a cut that blends everything together.

Your holiday extension timeline

Early November: book your consultation

Every extension plan at our salon starts with a one-on-one consultation. This is where we look at your hair's density and health, talk about your lifestyle and goals, match color and decide which method fits you. If you want extensions for Thanksgiving, this is the time to come in. An extensions consultation is $155 and up, and your install price is quoted at the consultation because it depends on the method, amount of hair and length.

Mid-November: color first, then install

If you're planning a fresh color for the season, like a richer brunette, softer blonde or gray blending, we coordinate it with your extensions so everything matches. Your stylist will plan the order and timing of your appointments. You can explore our hair color services in Houston and see what's trending in our fall and winter 2026 color guide.

Late November to early December: settle in

Give yourself a little time to get used to washing, brushing and styling your new hair before your biggest events. Most clients feel at home with their extensions after the first week or two. This is also a great time to book a professional blowout so you can see how your hair looks fully styled.

Mid-December: maintenance and party styling

Depending on your method, you may need a move-up or maintenance visit to keep everything sitting right. Plan your party styling now, too. Our makeup services pair beautifully with a blowout, and special occasion styling starts at $155 and up, with makeup application at $103 and up.

My honest advice: the salon gets busy in December, and we're open Tuesday through Saturday only. The earlier you book, the more appointment times you'll have to choose from.

Which extension method is right for you?

We offer several methods so we can recommend what actually fits your hair, rather than forcing one option on everyone. Here's how I explain them in my chair:

  • Hand-tied wefts. Rows of hair sewn onto a discreet beaded foundation. A favorite for natural-looking fullness and length. Read more about why we love hand-tied weft extensions.
  • Tape-ins. Thin, flat panels that lie close to the head. Great for natural-looking fullness and a smooth blend.
  • Micro-link / I-tip and fusion. Strand-by-strand options that offer a lot of flexibility in placement, which can be helpful for adding volume exactly where you want it.
  • Clip-ins. A no-commitment option. Perfect if you want extra drama for one or two big nights without a long-term install.

The best choice depends on your hair density, how you wear your hair day to day and what you want for the season. That's exactly what we work out together at your consultation. See all of our hair extensions in Houston, browse the extensions gallery, or read more about our extension services.

Extensions and thinning hair in midlife

So many women in their 40s, 50s and beyond tell me their hair simply isn't as full as it used to be. Hormonal changes in perimenopause and menopause can affect hair texture and density, and that's something I write about in my book MENO POSSE. Extensions can be a wonderful confidence boost, but they need to be planned with care so they don't put stress on fine or fragile hair. We choose the method, amount of hair and placement around the health of your natural hair. For more on this, read Menopause Hair Thinning: What Changes and How Your Stylist Can Help.

How to care for extensions through a Houston winter

Our winters swing from muggy to dry and back again, and holiday styling means more heat than usual. A few habits will keep your extensions and your natural hair healthy:

  • Brush gently and often. Use a soft extension-friendly brush, start at the ends and work up, and hold your hair near the attachment points as you go.
  • Keep it hydrated. Extension hair doesn't get natural oils from your scalp, so a good conditioner and a light oil on the ends matter even more when the air turns dry. Our hair treatments help, too.
  • Protect from heat. Always use a heat protectant and keep hot tools on a moderate setting.
  • Sleep smart. Dry your hair completely before bed, sleep in a loose braid or low ponytail, and use a silk or satin pillowcase.
  • Keep your maintenance appointments. Regular visits keep your extensions sitting comfortably and blending well.
